Oedipus vs Othello
Upon reading “Othello,” I noticed a few similarities between the play and Sophocles’ “Oedipus.” Both Othello and Oedipus are very distinguished men. Oedipus was born to King Lauis and Queen Jocasta of Thebes, but because of a prophecy, they leave Oedipus to die in the mountains. However, Oedipus is found and, even though he wasn’t raised by the King and Queen of Thebes, the King and Queen of Corinth did raise him, so he is still considered royalty in Corinth. As an adult, Oedipus saves the town of Thebes from the Sphinx after King Lauis has disappeared never to return. Oedipus is then declared King of Thebes and marries Jocasta, who, he did not know at the time, was his mother.
