Drama Review on Production of Mother Courage
Mother Courage Drama Review Introduction: On the 13th of March 2000 we, the fourth year class, have been to a production called Mother Courage which was performed in the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford. ... The play is about a woman, Mother Courage, who sells goods to warriors, and who loses her dearest children in the war. ... Beneath the tower, the screen was rolled up to enable Mother Courage’s and her children’s cart to move in. ... And at the end, there was Kattrin, Mother Courage’s daughter on the roof of the scaffolding tower- at the right stage- who was attached to a rope, and at one moment, she swing high above the stage, drumming. Set Design- Part B- Analysis The set designer was hoping that we would understand that Mother Courage’s world was cold, hard, rough and lonely. ... The lights were very affective when Mother Courage and her Children walked in the snow, trying to pull the heavy cart, in the cold winter: the colour of the lights were blue and white, to show the colour of the rain and snow and also to prove that it was cold and terrible to live. ... In another scene, there were two “groups of actors” on both sides of the stage: in one of them, Mother Courage, trying to sell her fresh fish to the Cook. ... I particularly liked the part when Mother Courage hears about what had happened to her daughter, after the terrible incident. ... This colour went well with the terrible screams of Mother Courage. But then, the colour of the lights suddenly changed: the stage became light green, neutral colour, expressing the despair and hope of Mother Courage who was still willing to see her son, Swiss Cheese, who had just been shot, the night before. ... For example, at the beginning of the performance Mother Courage started to sing along with the accordions, and beating the rhythm, clapping with her hands and even involving the public to clap with her. ... The sound was very effective when it was cold and dark, and whiles Mother Courage and her three children pulled the cart away. ... I particularly liked the music and sounds made by the actor who was playing the role of a recruiting soldier and who danced, sang along with Mother Courage and played the accordion, at the beginning of the play, while all the actors were playing the introduction of the performance. ... Costumes- Section A Description The costumes varied according to the characters’ personality: for example, Mother Courage was often wearing a very imposing dress and a huge coat which she wore on top of her dress. ... On the contrary, Yvette, who was a friend of Mother Courage, was a prostitute and was therefor wearing sexy, short but quite dirty clothes and red leather high hill boots. ... But when Mother Courage hears that her daughter has been shot, she’s wearing a black dark cape to show her grief and sorrow. ... Acting- Part A Description Mother Courage, played by Kathryn Hunter, is very courageous, as she tries by any ways to save her children, and do the best for them.
