Joshua
The Biblical character Joshua is probably best known to most people as the leader of the Israelites at the Battle of Jericho; and it is true that he was a successful military leader. However, Joshua was a lot more than this. He was a man of even greater faith, obedience, courage, and devotion to Yahweh, his God. Because of these qualities God blessed Joshua in many ways. He selected Joshua to be the successor of Moses and continued to bless Joshua and the Israelites as long as Joshua remained faithful to Him. To understand the special relationship that Joshua had with God, and vice versa, it is necessary to examine some of the events in Joshua's life that provide evidence of his unfailing devotion to God, obedience to God and faith in God.
Joshua was born in Egypt while the Hebrews were slaves to Pharaoh. Joshua is first introduced to us in an account in the Book of Numbers. Joshua is one of 11 spies Moses chose to go into the land of Canaan and see what the Israelites would expect when and if they crossed over the Jordan into Canaan. The spies reported back to Moses and the Israelites that the land of Canaan was "a land with many fruits" but also a land full of "cities very well fortified, and with many strong looking people" (Numbers 13: 27-28). Of the 11 spies only Joshua and Caleb believe that the Israelites would be able to defeat the fortified cities and the giants. Joshua reported that "If the Lord is pleased with us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us. Only, do not rebel against the Lord; and do not fear the people of the land, for they are no more than bread for us; their protection is removed from them, and the Lord is with us; do not fear them" (Numbers 14: 8-10). Joshua's stand is our first evidence that he has total faith in God and is willing to be obedient to Him no matter what the cost and no matter what others around him may say or believe.
