Reading Log Title: Invisible Man Author: Ralph Ellison Setting: The story takes place in Harlem, New York around the 40’s and 50’s. Memorable Characters: The most memorable character would have to be the central character. Although the narrator’s name remains a mystery throughout the novel, he still remains a memorable character. He embarks on a journey to find freedom and his own identity. He encounters characters on the way that shape and remold his personality and attitude. He struggles with the feeling of entrapment because of racism .He always belonged to a group; whether it was college, the paint factory or the Brotherhood. It isn’t until the end of the novel when he realizes that in order to find his true self he needs to lose his mask of blind acceptance and belonging. The narrator ‘s grandfather is very crucial to how the narrator thinks. Throughout the novel, the grandfather is the one that fuels the narrator’s fears. Laying on his deathbed, he said some bitter words that have stuck with the narrator throughout his journey. He tells him to “yes” the white men to death.
