Wife of Bath as a 21st century woman
The Wife of Bath as a 21st Century Woman If Geoffrey Chaucer had written The Canterbury Tales in the year 2003, no one would have been interested in the title character: The Wife of Bath. Fortunately for those who love a good argument, Chaucer created a character in the fourteenth century that was like no other. The Wife of Bath had certainly “pushed the envelope” when it came to being a lady of that time. Like a woman of today, The Wife of Bath was a very powerful, outspoken woman. ... Though I do not entirely agree with describing her as a feminist, I will say she is a woman who has been placed way before her time. In The Wife of Bath Prologue, the reader soon learns “The Wife” is not afraid to challenge the Bible. ... If I had to compare her to a woman of today, I would say she is a combination of Elizabeth Taylor, Joan Rivers, and Doctor Ruth.
