Discuss the theme of sexism in 'The Merchant of Venice'
Individual Task Project Task Title My task title for this project will be on spreading vegetarianism through different changes in diets. Over the years many people over the world have changed their diets to being vegetarian through different beliefs and for this reason I am going to explore the various foods available to vegetarians. Task Analysis I will find out what vegetarians are, what the differences are between the diets of normal people and this sect and the reasons why many have been following vegetarianism and the present statistics in the U.K. I will find out about any history behind vegetarianism and in the present day if celebrities do follow this way of life and why. I will then find information on the nutritional requirements of vegetarians. I will research on alternative products (e.g. quorn) to meat that can be consumable by vegetarians. I will create a 7-day menu to show the various foods that can be eaten normally. I will show what sort of food products are available for vegetarians in the format of pictures. Research and Knowledge The Reason of Vegetarianism Vegetarians are people who restrict certain foods from their diet at the cost of a belief. These peoples diets normally consist of foods like vegetables, cereals, seeds, fruits and nuts plus if there is strict observance hey do not include eggs or dairy products. Vegetarians derive from the word vegetarianism, which is like a cult group, which are against slaughtering or usage of living things for consuming purposes. Nowadays there are many varieties of vegetarians, which have their own way of following certain rules. Such types known are; Semi-vegetarians, Vegetarians, Lacto-ovo-vegetarians, Lacto-vegetarians, Vegan and Fruitarians. The widest group of vegetarians I know present in the U.K. are Semi-vegetarians and Lacto-vegetarians. As I am a Lacto-vegetarian myself the project will be more around this type of diet. Although when doing my practical I will decide to look at Vegans as well. The reason behind why people are changing or have been following a vegetarian diet is uncountable. Such reasons that are heard one to many are: Religion disallows consumption of a living soul, it is cruel to kill an animal in the first place, rearing animals and then killing them is a waste of time and money, a herbivorous diet is healthier than that of an carnivorous, animals can contract illnesses and if slaughtered then consumed it might spread. Statistics about peoples diet are changing many times in their lifetimes from this prophecy it has been calculated that at any one time 4% of the U.K. population are vegetarian. The Vegetarian History Vegetarianism has been spreading for many decades or centuries even through generations. The way vegetarianism has been spreading can be expressed in the way of horizontal and vertical. Horizontal is the spread through different continents and countries where as vertical means movement between years or time. The main concept throughout this journey is to reduce inflicting pain, cruelty and suffering to animals. To prove that this statement is true, human fossils were discovered in East Africa suggesting that the people used to live entirely on nuts, grains and vegetables. In my view they still do as famine has cut down on their supplies to rear animals for consumption. Also archaeological evidence shows that in the Hebrides region, Scotland there was once a community of vegetarians. Nowadays as technological advances seem to be made the control over each owns individuality increases. Vegetarianism has also spread from the eastern to the western world. From this I can say that this has influenced many people to join this sect even celebrities or Famous people who once were or are vegetarian. Names like Leonardo da Vinci, Pamela Anderson Lee, Sir Isaac Newton, Vincent Van Gogh, David Duchovny, Dan Castellaneta a.k.a Homer Simpson, Albert Einstein and Danny de Vito. What amazed me is that the reason why celebrities and others are mainly vegetarian because it helps in their fitness and physique. The Nutritional Requirements The nutritional requirements for vegetarians vary widely as an herbivorous diet is different to that of carnivorous. I will explain what the main nutrients are needed for and the sources a vegetarian can receive it from. Protein - the body for growth and repair requires Protein. Different plant products provide numerous amounts of protein although most vegetarian foodstuff is of LBV class. Good sources are bread, cereals, beans of all types, TVP (Textured Vegetable Protein), soya milk, nuts, seeds and potatoes, cheese and milk. Carbohydrate - Carbohydrate is required by the body to provide energy for the bodily systems to work properly. This macronutrient is known also as the ‘protein sparer’ because it allows protein to do its normal functions needed by the body rather than give energy. Good sources are bread, potatoes, cassava, rice, cereals e.t.c These food products also supply good amounts NSP. Fat - Fat is required by the body to supply an immediate source of energy. It works along side with Carbohydrate. It can be helpful if eaten in appropriate proportions otherwise too much and it is stored under the skin as adipose tissue. Good sources are vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, olives, avocado pears and dairy products. Vitamins and Minerals - Vitamins and Minerals are micronutrients, which means that we only require them in a small amount to help us every day and keep us healthy. Too much or too little can result in major damaging effects. Good sources can be of many types like vegetables, fruits, oils, dairy products, tea, and cereals e.t.c. The Alternative Products As most of the population in the world have a carnivorous diet the vegetarians seem to miss out on the enjoyment they would like to obtain of a similar nature. For this alternative foods have been produced to replace meat so they can eat foods normally eaten by normal eaters. These alternatives are known as TVP or Textured Vegetable Protein (Soya), Tofu and Quorn. TVP is made from soya beans. As the beans take a long time to cook they are produced in this way. The TVP is then shaped, flavoured and coloured plus fortified with other nutrients like vitamins and minerals to provide the same quality as meat. Quorn is a recent development to vegetarianism. It is made from a fungus that is commercially grown called mycoprotein. Quorn is then fermented with glucose syrup and minerals to help it grow. Tofu is made from soya beans as well. Though tofu is soya bean curd and has similar characteristics like texture to that of cheese. Both quorn and TVP are healthy alternatives as they are low in fat and high in protein plus fortified nutrients provide more nutrition.
