Privacy

Rarely would one find a person whose actions in public directly parallel what they would do in private. A person would have to be a Saint for this to apply. Author Milan Kundera makes the correct assertion that people act differently in public and in private, establishing their individuality and to infringe upon this separation; that is, prying into ones private life; is the most despicable of crimes. This holds true for most circumstances, but a few instances call for the suspension of this right.
The right to privacy is the foundation of the American Constitution. Privacy allows us life, liberty, and to pursue happiness. Without this, American would turn into a police state, ala Germany circa World War II, the Soviet Union, China and North Korea, as well as a majority of the Middle East. Luckily, we have a distinction between the two realms and for the most part are separated. It is this separation that allows a person to be an individual. There would be problems abound if our private and public lives were meshed. For instance, if any of my dad's business associates saw the passion with which he cheers on the New York Giants and the hysterics that ensue during the NFL season, he would not appear on another television screen anywhere. The professional respect that my father has earned would be dashed because of his antics. A separation must be maintained between the public and private sectors. There are other instances where this infringement of privacy has caused problems. Some that that come to mind are the confrontations between the paparazzi and Princess Diana. This ultimately led to her death. One also thinks of President Nixon, the Watergate scandal and subsequent cover up attempt as well as President Clinton and his affair with Monica Lewinski. More recently, there was the lawsuit over the Dale Earnhardt autopsy photos and report. There was no reason for the public to have access to these files or even see them. It was none of our business.
