Wayne's World
Penelope Spheeris's Wayne's World is a film that breaks free from the Hollywood standard but also in many ways relies on it for its widespread success. The film is about two slacker friends who try to promote their public cable show that catches on and goes to a major network which doesn't feel the same. The film is done in a very independent style but also brushes against the requirements to meet the Hollywood standard.
Penelope Spheeris violates the Hollywood standard in a few ways. One way is that their not your usual hero's or main characters, in fact some might consider the main character's in the film losers. Another way it does not follow the Hollywood standard is that the main characters turn to the camera look directly into in and speak to the audience. It also violates the Hollywood standard in that when the achieve the goal of fame and fortune they are not happy with it and their struggle is no longer a grand American dream it is simply to get back on track with their old style of life.
The film Wayne's World also follows the Hollywood standard in many ways. One way it follows the Hollywood standard is that the attracted audience can relate to the characters on a certain level making them feel as peers. At the time of release "Hair Metal" was on the decline and Seattle Grunge was all the rage. Any teen at the time could relate with these lazy and unusually motivated slackers. Wayne's World also follows the Hollywood standard by having the characters be happy in the end. They get the girl and the lifestyle they want, even if that lifestyle does not follow the standard exactly.
In conclusion Penelope Spheeris is an independent film maker who combines elements of the Hollywood standard and anti-Hollywood standard to make an entertaining and cult following film. The story of Wayne and Garth is enhanced with hilarious musical style scenes that really make the film a memorable experience.
