what is art

What is art? ... Of course there is no right or wrong when writing or talking about art as it is so dependent upon how one views the world unlike the sciences, which can have very concrete answers with no chance for additional interpretation. Many have written on the topics of; what is art and beauty as well as the concepts of aesthetic value and meaning all with their own valid justification and viewpoint.
The question of “What is art?” seems to be a common thread that one reads of and speaks of in the art community, of course there are many theories as to what is art and what isn’t. Some answer with broad statements such as “Art needs representation or expression or exemplification… or it cannot exist without it” which means that art needs to mean something or communicate something or represent something to be considered art (Goodman, Nelson: 1). Others with more cerebral ideas like “Art does not reproduce what we see; rather, it makes us see” which means that art helps show the viewer something which maybe completely foreign to them and is only seen in the vision of the artist (Klee, Paul).
