Operashun Intelligence (Critical Essay) The short story Flowers for Algernon, is a gripping tale about the everlasting drive towards the advancement of science; or more particularly the drive towards increasing human intelligence. The author Daniel Keyes, bring us into world of Charlie Gordon, a retarded man. Through the character’s journal we quickly learn of Charlie’s lack of intelligence; he has a meager IQ of 68. The reader is made aware of this through Charlie’s poor reasoning and writing skills. His social life, or lack there-of consists of his co-workers; so-called “friends” who would publicly humiliate him, and who would coin phrases after him such as “pulling a Charlie Gordon”. Of course he would just laugh along with them without understanding, assuming it was all friendly humor. Little did he know they were all laughing at him, rather then with him. At this point Charlie Gordon is living very simple and sheltered life. Charlie then undergoes surgery that nearly triples his IQ. He begins his climb towards human brilliance and now sees the world in a new light. Things in reality are not what he once thought they were. What his friend Miss Kinnian was worried about unfortunately occurs - he comes to the sad realization that his co-workers were having laughs at his expense.
