Washington Naval Conference

The Washington Naval Conference(International Conference on Naval Limitation (1921-22)), was held in Washington DC starting in November 1921 and ending in February 1922. The Secretary of State Charles Evans Hughes set the tone for the Conference by pressing for bold proposals for naval disarmament. ... In attendance were five of the main naval forces of post World War I. Those in attendance were the United States, Great Britain, France, Italy, and Japan the five naval forces. Also in attendance at the conference were: Belgium, China, The Netherlands, and Portugal. The meeting was to discuss naval disarmament of the big five naval forces. The main goal of for the United States at this conference was to try and contain the Japanese growth in the Far East as well as reduce size of the navies and security forces in the Pacific. We wanted to maintain a naval superiority over Japan due in part to our mistrust of the Japanese.
