Brave New World s Uncanny Vision on Contemporary Society
... Nevertheless, two mid-twentieth century novelists, George Orwell and Aldous Huxley, assumed the task of predicting our world’s future standing. ... Neil Postman, a contemporary social critic, clearly conveys his belief that Aldous Huxley’s vision in the novel Brave New World proves more relevant today than that of Orwell’s vision as expressed in the novel 1984. It is my belief that the history of recent decades confirms that Huxley’s projections of future society are, indeed, closer to reality than those found in the dark, totalitarian society portrayed by Orwell. First of all, following the publication of both novels, facts, which continue to emerge in the world, do not support the Orwellian thesis of a domineering, repressive government. In fact, the contemporary systems of government, in which “the roots of liberal democracy had held,” prove to be quite the contrary to Orwell’s expected occurrences, involving a centralized government annihilating the rights of the people.
