In selecting an artist to create my portrait, what is most important to me is that I first must have respect for what the artist is able to do (namely, something I myself cannot). For example, I have been and always will be in awe of the talents of artists like da Vinci, Michelangelo and Rubens. They take something from the real world, mix some paint, put a brush to canvas, and capture forever the emotions of a moment. That is a gift. The hearts and hands of these men were touched by God, and to have had any one of them paint my portrait on canvas would have been the experience of a lifetime. In contrast, I would not consider an artist like Jackson Pollock, whose work looks like a kitchen floor after an amateur housepainter forgot to lay down a tarp.
