In Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun there are several inanimate objects that have meaning deeper than their existence. Some of these objects are more direct in their meaning and some are less so. The most prominent and meaningful object is Lena’s little plant. The puny shrub is ever-present throughout the play and is used to convey some deeper thoughts than one would gather from just what is being said between the characters. Hansberry carefully chose how Lena would interact with her plant to make these points more obvious. Act I scene I, the first thing Lena Younger does upon entering the play brings the first of these objects to our attention, the plant.
