Impressionism and PostImpressionism
Impressionism and Post-Impressionism are two similar phrases yet, two completely different concepts. In 1910, Roger Fry, identified a wide-range of reactions against Impressionism and gave them the rather inadequate term Post- Impressionism. Post-Impressionisms implies that Impressionism was a distinctive style uniform in composition. However, Impressionism is a highly diversified faction. Impressionism is a very light, spontaneous manner of painting that began in France as a response to and against formalism. If Impressionism were given a hallmark it would be the artist ability to capture the subjective impression of light.
