Saxophone Recital
David Matthews, a graduate student at the University of Florida, performed a saxophone recital on Tuesday, March 25, 2003 in room 120 of the Music Building. ... David Matthews selected four pieces for his performance and they included: Sequenza IXb by Luciano Berio, Murmur by David Matthews, Two Elegies Framing a Shout by Mark Anthony Turnage, and Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano. ... It was a solo saxophone piece. Like all the selected pieces of music, it was much different than what the average person would expect to hear at a saxophone concert. ... To genuinely appreciate this piece, one would have to have a great knowledge of music itself and the saxophone. ... I, personally, was not a fan of the piece of music, but that probably comes from my little knowledge in the areas of the saxophone and the genre of music that was being played. The next piece played in the recital was one of David Matthews’s own compositions. ... Brian Hargrove accompanied David Matthews on the piano for this piece while Matthews played a melody on the soprano saxophone. ... It had a homophonic texture as the soprano saxophone provided the melody and the piano as the accompanist. The piano played much more of a soothing sound than did the saxophone, although it did follow the sax. ... The saxophone player seemed to really be playing with every emotion and to the average onlooker of a saxophone piece; it seemed to be very difficult to play. ... The most striking thing about the performance of the piece is when the saxophone player turns toward the piano and plays directly into the piano and the strings of it accompany the tune of the saxophone.
