Eveline’s struggles are very similar to ones that James Joyce had to face in his life in Ireland, which is where the story takes place. Both Eveline and Joyce faced issues of social respect. According to the biographical website “The James Joyce Centre”, Joyce left the country of Ireland because he felt disrespected as one of his colleagues, George Roberts heavily criticized his book of short stories “The Dubliners”. ... Eveline also encountered issues of respect. In the story the narrator mentions that Eveline will find respect for having a man in the city that they plan to move to, Buenos Aries. The narrator also mentions that one of Eveline’s concerns is what other people in the society will think of her. ... ” (Joyce, pg 214).
