“Coal Grove” The main character, Nick, in the short story “Coal Grove” is a hopelessly dishonest and unhappy man on the verge of ruining most of his personal relationships. When we first meet Nick, he is walking his dog in the rain, and he seems fairly harmless. As the story progresses, we learn that Nick is not so harmless to those around him – he cannot trust his son, his entire relationship with his friend Mac is based on a lie, he is cheating on his girlfriend, Emma, and though he claims to be in love with his mistress Carol, he doesn’t seem to treat her very well. Nick’s son Buck is twenty-three, and he lives at home with Nick and their dog. Buck has a past of drug abuse, but is now trying to stay clean. Nick doesn’t seem very supportive of his son’s efforts, and instead he comes off as suspicious and distrusting, which in turn pushes his son further away. Emma recognizes this in Nick and warns him, “Show a little more trust or you’ll lose him, you’ll lose your son!” (Deaver 20).
