What Is Design

INTRODUCTION

'Design' is a word with no exact definition. It is commonly used as either a noun or a verb. As a noun, 'design' generally refers to some object or other entity. As a verb it is usually used to refer to a process, or series of activities. Although it is a practice that has existed long in the society, no one knows the exact meaning, as there is no absolute definition to 'design'. Design is an area that can be viewed differently from different areas. The definitions of it are often intersecting and overlapping one another but none is more precise than the others as they each have their own reasoning. This essay will point out design as a form of visual communication; design as a language; design as a measurement of value; design is subjective; design is problem solving; and how design can be used as a marketing tool.

WHAT IS DESIGN?

2.1 Design is a form of visual communication

In the article 'Wicked Problems in Design Thinking', Richard Buchanan (1995; 7) states the four broad areas that design is explored throughout. The first two areas reflect design as a form of visual communication.
The first area is the design of symbolic and visual communication. The traditional work of graphic design is combining text and graphics and communicating an effective message in the design of logos, graphics, brochures, newsletters, posters and signs, and it is expanded through photography, film, television and
computer design. The second area is the design of material objects. In everyday products, design really
involves and concerns about the form and visual appearance.
Organizing visual communication in society is what Jorge Frascara (1995; 46) considered what graphic
