Importance Of Black History
The Importance of Black History
Black History seems to be a subject that is misunderstood. Many students seem to be unaware and misinformed about the subject. Olivia Lockhart states, " While February is a time to focus on our history, we have to be aware that Black history has been left out of the text books that our students read year round."(Mekerson) Black or African-American history is often swept under the rug. Between the African-American and the American community we are under informed about Black History. In this essay, I'm going to be discussing whether or not Black History is of importance to Americans, if African-American contributions are recognized by America, and also whether or not it should be included in elementary and secondary education.
In 1926 an African-American historian Carter Woodson invented what we have come to know as Black History Month. Carter believed that inventing Black History month would give attention to the achievements of African-Americans. Its purpose was to promote, teach, and celebrate every aspect of Black History. Prominent Black Historians and also Black students believe that the history of Africa and the African-Americans has been covered up by Europeans scholars and is at the risk of being lost. Students and the African-American community are led to believe that most of the history in Africa and Black contributions to America is Dark (The Importance of Black History). Dar in the sense that Black History has no past, everything that Blacks contributed to was not important or did not matter. Misconceptions like this one and to the under represented Black History. Henry Codjoe believes that in order to understand why Black History is so important we need to first understand Africa.
