Short Term Memory

Short-term memory is important for every day life. Short-term memory is needed to do simple tasks that people do every day like remembering things to do, a phone number, etc. The prefrontal cortex is active during short-term memory. The levels of dopamine in the brain affects how short-term memory functions. Memory is the ability to recall thoughts or prior experiences. ... Memory is like “an erasable mental blackboard” that allows you to hold information briefly in your mind and manipulate it. (1) There are two types of memory, declarative and nondeclarative. Declarative memory, also called explicit memory, is the memory of events and facts and it works by establishing relationships between events and things which one has experienced. Nondeclarative memory formed from skill tasks of any kind, simple conditioning and learning without associating objects and events. There are two types of declarative memory, episodic and semantic. Episodic memory allows for a person to recall things they have experienced. Semantic memory allows you to remeber the names and definitions of things that you read about. An example fo episodic memory is remembering where I was when I wrote this paper. An example of semantic memory is remembering the plot of the movie, but not every single scene or every single little detail of the movie. There are also two types of nondeclarative memory, procedural and priming. Procedural memory is the memory associated with any conditioned response. Priming memory allows you to remember seeing something in the past without any idea of where it was you saw it or how it was used. An example of procedural memory is riding a bike or something that once you learn, you do not forget. There are two different types of memory durations, short-term and long-term memory. This is the most common category of memory. Short-term memory, also known as working memory, is memory that only lasts for a few seconds. Some say that short-term memory lasts for only a few seconds, but others say it could last up to several hours, like something you learn only for an exam and you forget it shortly after. Long-term memory is retained indefinately. There are several differences between short and long-term memory and how they function. One difference is the way information enters the short and long-term memory stores. In short-term memory, information enters when you pay attention to the stimulus. ... In long-term memory, information enters if the information from short-term memory is rehearsed enough and if meaning is applied to the information from short-term memory. ... Short-term memory has three possible types of coding.
