Kate Chopin’s short stories show women in Victorian society conforming to traditional roles with family, marriage, and society. Although Kate Chopin is considered to be a feminist writer, she wrote short stories like “Respectable Women”, “A point at Issue”, “The Storm”, and “A Pair of Silk Stockings” to show how women celebrate traditional roles. ... Mobry picks up after Naomi’s piano sheets and arranges them on the stand (Chopin, “Mobry’s” 46). ... Mobry’s first care was always Naomi’s health; then, Naomi’s happiness” (Chopin, “Mobry’s” 48). For mothers to go places, it sometimes can be difficult because of their children, “she carried little Elodie” and “ she dragged Ti Nomme by an unwilling hand” (Chopin, “Regret” 177). ... She stares from window to window and pays attention to every single sound (Chopin, “Mobry’s” 49). ... Sommers believes “A dollar or two should be added to the price usually paid for Janie’s shoes, which would ensure their lasting an appreciable time longer than they usually did” (Chopin, “Stockings” 437). She wants her children to look adorable with “caps for the boys and sailor hats for the girls” (Chopin, “Stockings” 438). ... She had a mental picture of “her little brood looking fresh and dainty and new for once in their lives excited her and made her restless and wakeful with anticipation” (Chopin, “Stockings” 438). ... Chopin showed the significance and “The importance of physical passion and of sexual self awareness” (Magill 1135) in numerous of her short stories. In her short story, “The Storm”, Chopin describes complete and straightforward human sexual satisfaction. For example, in “The Storm” Kate Chopin writes of sex being enjoyable, “When he touched her breasts they gave themselves up in quivering ecstasy, inviting his lips”(Chopin, “The Storm” 252). Chopin uses strong words of ownership to describe the act of sex, “he possessed her…”(Chopin, “The Storm” 252).
