Introduction This paper explains about various classes of models for calculating the different aspects of lightning parameters so as to calculate the lightning return stroke. What is lightning return stroke? It is nothing but flow of current through a ionized channel, it is a visible component of lightning which moves with a velocity of 80,000km/sec with a peak current of 10-20KA. The four classes of models are. 1. The gas dynamic model. 2. The electromagnetic model. 3. The distributed circuit model. 4. The engineering model. These models are needed for studying the physics of the lightning discharge and its interaction with the various objects and system. The gas dynamic model This model is used to find the temperature, pressure and mass density of lightning hence this model is called as “physical model”.
