Quiet Man Short Story Vs Film
"The Quiet Man", in the form of the short story, shows the themes of greed and ambition more clearly than the form of the movie. The characters in the short story are portrayed as greedy and ambitious because of the conflict. The movie portrays the main characters differently and adds other sub characters that do not evidently show greed and ambition in the roles played compared to the short story. The conflicts of the movie and the short story are also different. Many similarities and differences depict greed and ambition, however, the short story proves the themes to be more evident.
The short story makes obvious of the role of greed and Big Liam O'Grady. Liam steals the Kelvin acres of land. Liam stole the acres to gain more wealth from the land, and he does not deserve any land. Liam tries to keep Ellen, his sister, single so that she can continue to do the housework. The O'Grady wants to marry Kathy Carey, the widow, only because of her wealth. She refuses to marry him because of the unmarried Ellen. Therefore, Liam seeks out Shawn. Liam's motivation in the short story is clearly proven to be greed in the many examples of the short story.
Ambition is the most evident quality of Shawn Kelvin. Shawn comes back to live in Ireland on Knockanore hill, because Liam stole his family's land. Shawn tries to avoid as many fights as possible with him, except in the end when greedy Liam stirs up trouble over the dowry of his wife, Ellen. The short story also dramatically shows the ambition of Shawn to not want the dowry, which is why he is the quiet man. Shawn finally stands up to Liam and burns his money because Shawn doesn't want or need it. This proves his character's ambition overall. The short story format displays and makes clear the ambition without the addition of any other characters.
