In this novel Brian misunderstands and has many misconceptions about everything. Some of the misunderstandings Brian has are about death, people and God. This novel really shows how a child thinks and how they can judge; deal with their conflict and situations. Brian has many misunderstandings about death. He experiences death many times in this novel. First, his baby pigeon died and that was very hurtful for him. To make him feel better Mr.Connal agrees to let Brian have his puppy, Jappy, back.
