Abuse
Many American women are emotionally and physically abused daily. Whether or not these women are abused by boyfriends, husbands, or friends none of them have a choice. The man takes control of the woman's body and mind and abuses it against her will.
Some may ask what exactly is a battered woman? A battered woman is a woman who is repeatedly subjected and exposed to physical and psychological behavior by a man against her will. These women get into a situation that gets beyond their control and become emotionally strangled by the man until they are unable to get out. These women will cover for the man, hide their bruises and emotional scars and accept the treatment they are given as "love."
Some results of the abuse are broken body parts, bruises, scars, detachment from family and friends, and sometimes death. These women suffer humiliation, pain, and alienation that delve deep into their lives forever.
The next question one may ask is why do these women stay in a relationship like that? There are many different reasons women stay in these relationships. One reason is they rationalize that they deserve the abuse, often identifying with the batterer's faulty reasoning. Another reason is they feel worthless and cannot get anyone better. Regardless of her reason, every battered woman is trapped in the relationship until the point comes that she realizes she has to get our or keep putting up with it.
Who is the battered woman? Is she young and white? Is she old and black? What type of financial status does she have? Is she wealthy or poor? "Battered women are found in all age groups, races, ethnic and religious groups, educational levels, and socioeconomic groups." (Walker 19)
There are many characteristics of a battered women, but here are some common ones that show through:
