In this poem, the author is suggesting that, in essence, religion has killed off his childhood desires and joyous memories. The Garden of Love is being used to represent his childhood, and how as a child, he did not realize that the church would hold such a grip on his life. ... The author uses the garden of love to represent his childhood. As a child, all he paid attention to was the fun he used to have at the garden. All he saw was “Where he used to play on the green”, and “the Garden of Love, That so many sweet flowers bore”.
