But should pride and selfishness be a greater motivator than common sense? In Catherine Lim’s “The Jade Pendant” the story is about a traditional noble family and the choices they make and the consequences of those actions. The author structured the story by developing a plot that leads to the harm of having too much pride and the inability to see the negative impact of it. ... Khoo has a jade pendant which she had inherited from her mother that has caught the attentions of many people when she would wear it to special functions. ... Khoo will be handing the jade pendant down to Lian Kim as she will be wearing it at the wedding dinner for all the guests to see. ... Khoo budgeted out the costs of the wedding it occurred to her that they might not have enough money and the pendant would have to be sold because of their financial situation. ... In the following passage it shows that the family has a lot of pride and they are willing to sacrifice a family heirloom. A low budget wedding is not good enough for Lian Kim it’s either all or nothing for the one time occasion and she decided to lie about the absence of the jewel to keep the pride and not let anyone know about the family’s financial situation. ... The prospect of a modest wedding celebration was even more appalling than that of having to do without the Jade Pendant, and of the numerous excuses thought up to account for its absence, she at last settled on this one: that the huge old-fashioned jewel would not go nicely with her Dior gown.
