After reading chapter 3 I was left in a state of confusion. ... I tried to place my self in a certain situation, in this case, if I was a hard-determinist. Hard determinism is the doctrine that there are no free actions. ... It assumes that causal determinism (every event has a cause that makes it happen) is true. ... My initial reaction is anger, because I know he committed the crime, but then I recall that a hard determinist believes that a person is not to blame for their actions, because they have no control over them. On the broader scale, the whole idea of a court system, and judging in any way seems ludicrous because no one is ever going to be found guilty under hard determinism beliefs. So, if I was truly a hard determinist I guess I would have to agree with the court that O. ... Also, hard determinists believe that “nothing occurs by chance, but all if from necessity. ... There could be those kind of hard determinists as well. ... However, if I place myself in a hard determinist’s shoes I could not help but feel that the rumors were necessary and she/he had no control over spreading the lies.
