The Storm within “The Storm”

The storm, in the “The Storm” by Kate Chopin, is a symbol of Calixta’s slight but increasingly restless sexual passion waiting to explode at the first chance she gets. Like a storm, Calixta began quiet, calm, and unthreatening to man. As her passion begins to grow, she becomes more electric and powerful, a force driven by nature, as unable to control her desires as a storm is at controlling the damages it does; there is a storm within this storm.
