Af Of The Future
BACKGROUND PAPER
ON
STEALTH TECHNOLOGY THE AIRCRAFT OF THE FUTURE
Have you ever wondered where the future of the Air Force's (AF) aircraft will be going?
"Air power is the result of technology. Man has been able to fight with his hands or simple
implements and sail on water for millennia, but flight required advanced technology" (Meilinger:
57). A new advancement discovered in aircraft technology is the development of low observa-
tion technologies, better know as "Stealth." "The AF is staking its future on stealth and is
determined not to turn back. USAF's commitment to stealth is central to its plans and ambitions
for new bombers and fighters
"(Air Force Magazine, Jan 91). The development of the F-117
has opened the door to other aircraft, the B-2 "Spirit" Bomber and the F/A-22 Raptor, for
example, are the AF's newest and future stealth aircraft.
The definition of stealth is "The act of moving, proceeding, or acting in a covert way"
(The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language). Simply meaning, aircraft can
remain partially invisible to radar. This is accomplished by a method known as Radar Cross
Section. The use of careful shaping, composite materials for the skin, and new advancements in
metals for the airframe are some of the answer to allowing an aircraft to maintain stealth. But
this method of invisibility isn't entirely new. Would you believe, that it actually began in 1975
at Lockheed-Martin's secret facility in Burbank, CA also known as the "Skunk Works"? The
first flight of the most technically advanced aircraft of its time took off in June 1981. The
aircraft that made that flight was the F-117...
