There are many misunderstandings about the civil war, especially in the condition of the armies. The common that most people know is that the Union outnumbered the Confederacy, which is an advantage for the Union but there were others that gave the Union an edge as well. The Confederacy had greater problems then the Union at the battle of Gettysburg. The Unions problems, although they were numerous, lacked the complications that the Confederacy’s problem created. An example of a problem the Union had was the condition of Chamberlains men. As described by the narrator on page 123 of “The Killer Angels” by Michael Shaara, “But the rest were too tired. Chamberlain saw some staggering, then one fell out.
