Edith Wharton’s Ethan Frome is a tale of an obsequious man who half-heartedly attempts to live a blissful life. Throughout the novel, Ethan Frome is a moral, submissive man who, while capable of manipulating his fate, becomes a victim to forces over which he has little control and ultimately is unable to participate in his own destiny. Ethan is neither fully in control nor completely at the mercy of his surroundings; instead he allows his lack of courage to control him. Ethan’s existence is burdened by his just principles, his isolation in Starkfield and the fact that he lacks decisiveness, all of which prevent him from completely achieving a content state of being. One of Ethan’s major downfalls is his deeply implanted moral behavior. While morality is usually an excellent quality for a person to possess, it deprives Ethan of happiness.
