IT’S THE QUESTIONS THAT DRIVE AS MAD: PHILOSOPHICAL PERSPECTIVE OF THE MATRIX “Have you ever had a dream, Neo, that you were so sure was real? ... ” (The Matrix) After viewing the 1999 blockbuster, The Matrix, I was astounded by how many philosophical ideals could be packed into just over two hours of screen time; the most prominent being the examination of metaphysics: “the study of the most general or ultimate characteristic of reality or existence” (Velasquez 22). ... In order to keep the human beings controlled they are placed in the Matrix; a computer simulation program that dictates what we think we know as the “real” world. A group of technologically advanced individuals who themselves have broken out of the Matrix battle for the freedom of humanity. ... ” Neo is drawn from the Matrix, as is the man in Plato’s ‘The Myth of the Cave. ... As the man in the myth believed that the shadows on the wall were his sense of reality because it was all he knew previously, the Matrix acted as Neo’s shadows – it was all he knew and therefore his true perception of reality until proven otherwise.
