D H Lawrence Biography
David Herbert Lawrence took his first breath on September 11, 1885, at Eastwood in Nottinghamshire. Constant tuberculosis caused Lawrence to remain a sickly and inactive child. His parents had a rocky relationship, and Lawrence tended to side with his mother (often an inspiration for his works). ... Instead, she encouraged him academically and persuaded Lawrence to work hard at Nottingham High School until the age of fifteen when he had to seek employment in a surgical product factory. ... Lawrence soon attained a scholarship to University College, Nottingham, where he worked for his teacher’s certificate from 1906 onward.
