Tone, Word Choice and Point of View of “Hawk Roosting” Ted Hughes’s “Hawk Roosting” tells the lifestyle of a particular hawk and the way it thinks. The speaker’s tone and word choice clearly show a deep irony between the ways that the hawk and humans think. This is the point of view that the speaker demonstrates by actually going inside the mind of a hawk and living its thoughts. The tone and word choice of the poem bring out the point of view of the speaker. ... The authoritative and arrogant tone of the poem can be felt through many of the lines. The first line of the poem, “I sit in the top of the wood, my eyes closed,” gives the image of a hawk perched high and proud, yet calm and relaxed. ... It is as if the hawk has a divine knowledge that it holds enough power to roost confidently and not worry about anything. The words “in the top” complement the hawk’s position in the top of the chain.
