The message of how women’s bodies should appear, is everywhere in today’s American society. The message that is portrayed to young women in today’s society is that you can never be too thin or too pretty. ... Many Advertising companies attempt to make women feel imperfect about their own bodies in order to sell their product. ... The decided presence of these images shapes the image of women today. ... It’s very unfortunate that the media influences American society to the point that it defines the "ideal woman," Women, especially, are told that their efforts in perfecting their bodies will be rewarded by success in both their professional and personal lives. More women should be trying to shift the “ideal” women society wants us to be, to a more natural, self loving, do whatever feels good in your soul, kind of women. Women like India Arie are trying to do this, but it take more then just one. In today’s society, where depression and eating disorders are so common because, women are not happy with themselves because they are trying to become what the American society defines as the “ideal” women, there should be more positive messages put out by the media. ... The song completely contradicted what mass media and society would have you believe is feminine beauty. ... MTV, one of America’s biggest influence on deciding what the “ideal” woman is in today’s society writes, “When INDIA. ... COM) If MTV really felt liked her work and what she is trying to portray to the women of America, maybe they would be encouraging more women in today’s society to follow India Aries advice. India Arie writes in her first verse: “Sometimes I shave my legs and sometimes I don’t Sometimes I comb my hair and sometimes I won’t Depend of how the wind blows I might even paint my toes It really just depends on whatever feel good in my soul” She is telling the listener right off that you don’t have to always look perfect like society tells you, and that it is ok to do whatever feel good to you, and that being natural is how God intended us to be.
