Art And Fun Of Skateboarding

Skateboarding is the quintessential pastime; nothing is as versatile, creative and inventive, while at the same time being exhilaratingly gratifying, as that, that is skateboarding. Born out of suburban angst, skateboarding was designed in the early 1960's, by surfers who were looking for something enjoyable to do with their days, once the waves had died down after early morning.
Originally made from two by fours with clay roller skate wheels attached to them, skateboards were seen carving around streets, and down the biggest hills. Now made mostly of wood, and occasionally such innovative materials as titanium, and fiberglass, skateboards are seen tearing up urban landscapes or flowing through concrete skateboard parks. What has evolved from kids trying to find a non-aquatic rendering of surfing, is a legion of concrete warriors, urban guerrillas turning every bench, picnic table, and stair set into their own personal playground. And thus, my reader, is the sheer versatility of this pseudo-sport, pseudo-hobby, and all around joy, that is skateboarding. The ways in which skateboarding is enjoyed have changed drastically over the years since it was first popularized. It has gone through periods where it was used to basically cruise, go fast, perfect complex tricks, clear big gaps, gain big airs, and it is constantly evolving. I know that I find myself drawn to the ‘go big or go home' mentality of trying to jump increasingly large sets of stairs, gaps, and drop-offs, whereas my brother finds himself more at home with the intricacies of the many flips, spins, and board manipulations of technical flatground skating. Every single person who steps on a skateboard has their own unique idea of what is fun, and many find older fashions of skateboarding more attuned to their personality, and still others have the creativity needed to push skateboarding in whole new directions.
