East Versus West

Throughout US history the west has always been the land of opportunity to become rich whether by farming, gold, or the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. However, the east is a more established region, deep with history and tradition. Fitzgerald uses this stereotype to convey the differences between two different Long Island housing districts, the West and East Egg. The West Egg, represented by Nick and Gatsby, is home to the new rich, those who have made their own personal riches but are more radical, vulgar, and lack the traditions of the inherited rich. Opposite of them is the East Egg, represented by the Buchanan’s, who have traditions, do not exhibit vulgarity, but have been corrupted of the easiness which they achieved their wealth.
