Of God and Goodness

... Many people often relate the concept of “God” and “goodness” as being together. Although I agree that church does do a person good, I would have to say that God and goodness are independent of one another. ... Socrates and Euthyphro then engage in a conversation in which the essence of goodness is brought up. Euthyphro argues “Piety [(goodness)], then, is that which is dear to the gods, and impiety is that which is not dear to them” (Plato 5). ... This shows that God is nevertheless on man’s level in relations with goodness because similar to man, God doesn’t “produce” goodness. Since God does not “produce” goodness, Him loving something doesn’t “produce” goodness in it either. On a more personal level of my argument, I believe that people themselves can issue goodness rather than you know who. ... I don’t go and pray to the friendship department of God and ask for advice. ... Although this example is on a smaller degree level, it can be related to goodness and evil because any person can also think to themselves before taking an action. ... Since just actions can sometimes simply be obtain from the “golden rule”, it is evident that God and goodness can be two different things. God and goodness’s independency was further illustrated when Professor Marlowe (my philosophy teacher) gave us a thought experiment.
