Things Fall Apart
Things Fall Apart is a novel that illustrates the changes that occurred in Africa at the turn of the century. The setting for this novel pits traditional African society against the changes wrought by the colonialism of the British. Throughout the novel, Achebe presents a powerful presentation of the religion, values and kinship bonds present in traditional life, and how these elements adapt to change. The introduction of the European missionaries is not presented as a tragic event. The villagers do not perceive the missionaries as a threat like many other African villages have previously when introduced to colonialism. This could be attributed to the missionaries not forcing Christianity on the Igbos.
