French Indo China- French colonial, which Viet Nam was apart of. Geneva accords- a 1954 peace agreement that divided Vietnam into Communist-controlled North VN & Communist South VN until unification elections could be held in 1956 Cambodia/Laos/Viet Nam- 3 countries that were carved out of French Indo China Ho Chi Minh- leader of North Vietnam, created the Ho Chi Minh Trail that was a network of paths used by N. VN to transport supplies to the Vietcong in S.VN Domino Theory- nations would fall one after another--- 2 reason for invasion of Vietnam Containment- stop the spread of communism --------- 2 reason for invasion of Vietnam Pres Eisenhower-heavily invested in containment, gave weapons to fight Pres Kennedy- sent trainers/advisors to help the south and then sent soldiers to protect the advisors Pres Johnson- sent troops to begin fighting the war Pres Nixon- widened the war by stepping the line into Cambodia Pres Ford –in the white house when hostility ended and when the north took the south (seize fire followed by an invasion) Gulf of Ton kin Resolution- granted Johnson broad military powers, to protect the US with force.
