Giotto and Botticelli

Lamentation(s) Sandro Botticelli and Giotto are two exceptionally talented renaissance artists. Botticelli and Giotto both painted their interpretations of the “Lamentation” scene, in which Christ’s body is taken down from the cross. Both “Lamentations” painted by the artists Botticelli and Giotto, attain great similarities in addition to their countless differences. Giotto’s “Lamentation” is a fresco, commissioned by Enrico Scrovegni, located at the Arena Chapel in Padua. However, Botticelli’s rendering of the scene is created with the use of tempera paint on a panel, and is much larger in size compared to Giotto’s six and a half foot fresco.
