The protagonist of the story, Tayo, is struggling to keep balance in his life. ... Ceremony is not only a story about Native Americans; it is a Native American story. ... His memory of those times allowed Tayo to invent a ceremony that was made up of similar steps that he had followed as a child, adding contemporary necessities so that he may be relieved of his aliment. Although in Tayos case his ceremony is intended to heal, many ceremonies were looked upon as shows and were performed for entertainment.
