Evil can be found throughout human history. Although society has adapted to deter would be evildoers by imposing laws and establishing sophisticated governments, evil is still strong as ever. In the short story “The Possibility of Evil” by Shirley Jackson, we get the impression Miss Strangeworth is a sweet old lady who turns out to be quite evil. ... Miss Strangeworth fits the dictionary definition of evil perfectly. ... She believes that it’s her “duty to keep her town alert to [evil]” (Shirley Jackson, 217), but in fact she is the one doing evil.
