It has been a modern prevailing thought that ancient women have been second-class citizens and in many ancient societies women have been considered as low as slaves! The development of justice in the ancient east depended upon several factors, one of which being the civilization’s belief in the nature of god or gods. In Judah and Babylon there is a development of judgmental authority from tribal, “paterfamilias” to the ultimate judgmental authority belonging to a king but there is a difference in legislative authority between these two civilizations, which is directly related to the Hebrew’s belief in a monotheistic, omnipotent God.
