Fitting In

Fitting in. I can say that fitting in has continuity in my life, family and in the world around me. For example, my seven-year-old niece, Imani, ran into the room in her best dress, a dress covered with ruffles, lace, and bows. Lace stockings and shiny white patent leather shoes completed the outfit. “I’m ready,” she said. My sister looked over at her. “Imani”, you’re not wearing that. This is an outdoor birthday party, sweetie. All the other kids will have on shorts and tennis shoes.” “But I won’t”, Imani said. After a few more tries to get Imani to change, my sister gave up, and Imani went off to the party. I admired her spunk and determination to be different. But I wondered how long would it last. I thought about the way I act. Before I go anywhere, I go through a mental checklist to make sure I’ve worn the “right” thing.
