Victorian Cemetary

In beginning my assignment on grave symbolism I searched through my supplied resources to find a symbol I was interested in. I was very enthusiastic upon discovering the Celtic Cross as I am Irish in decent. I felt this assignment was a good opportunity to learn about a symbol of my homeland. I began my field research on March 11th, 2003, at the Ross Bay cemetery and searching for graves with Celtic Crosses on the top. I then logged all of the information on the tombstone, include additional art and poetry. After attaining 7 samples, I felt I was ready to begin my analysis and research of the history of the Celtic Cross. History The Celtic Cross is a Latin cross with a circle about the point of intersects. If you see the example in the appendix (insert page here) you will notice the indents in the cross just inside of the circle. The other identifying characteristic is the horizontal piece of the cross: after the indent it flattens back out before the ends of the piece. This flattening identifies the Celtic Cross as different from the Ionic Cross. The history of this simple shape is quite coloured.
