Acculturation and health care for Asian
Although Asian-Americans are the fastest growing ethnic group in the United States, the Asian population is still small and diverse. ... However, in order to give them the best care, health care and education professionals need to learn more about the past, present and emerging cultural practices of each Asians subgroups in order to become culturally responsive to this population. In addition, since acculturation has been linked to differences between the health status of Asian-Americans and Americans, health professionals need to understand this relationship in order to better serve this population. However, knowledge in this area tends to be limited to investigations on specific health issues such as psychosocial adjustment, mental health, and substance abuse or to the sample used in the studies. Therefore, there is a need for the development and design of studies to explore important issues through sampling of larger Asian-Americans groups. These kinds of studies will give health professionals a broader picture of issues affecting the Asian community, such as the impact of acculturation and cultural factors on health status of this population.
