Analysis Poem For Annie
The poem, “For Annie”, by Edgar Allan Poe, is based around the theme that life is an illness and death provides a cure to this illness. In the first stanza of the poem, Poe says “the lingering illness is over at last” suggesting that the poem is spoken from the dead. The fever is constantly referred to in this poem, and symbolizes this illness of living. ... Throughout the poem it suggests that Poe is suffering from withdrawal symptoms whether it be from an actual drug or from an addiction to Annie who this poem is written for and makes several references to his deep feelings for her. ... This revitalized by “bathing in many a dream of the truth and the beauty of Annie”. His lover Annie looks at him and cries as she “tenderly kisses” him and “prays to the angels”. He says “that you shutter to look at me, thinking me dead” when really his heart and spirit is more alive than ever and he filled with Annie’s love.
